client: devonport city council
description of project
hansen has revitalised the 'social heart' of the Devonport Foreshore Precinct through the redevelopment of the Surf Life Saving Club Plaza, a highly valued community asset. This vision was first encapsulated in the Mersey Bluff Precinct Framework, prepared by Hansen in 2008 as an overarching master plan for Devonport's valued coastal precinct. Hansen has since overseen the implementation of that vision through our engagement by Devonport City Council to undertake design development and documentation for the plaza.
The design provides a strong link to the foreshore and integrates ancillary activities to create a vibrant community hub. The redevelopment includes the construction of an architecturally designed Surf Life Saving Club building, upgraded sea wall, new car parking, an all abilities playground and the heart of the area- the central pedestrian plaza- which links the foreshore reserve to the beach. The coastal inspired paving breathes new life into this space, with an expanse of interlocking pavers transitioning in colour through to the sand and water beyond. Within the plaza a series of picnic, barbeque and seating elements enhance community usage and a succession of striking shelters and sculptural lighting illuminates the area.
The improvements have been sensitively designed to respond to the coastal environment as well as provide improved connections and access, retain significant vegetation, preserve and enhance views and create opportunities for passive and active recreational activities.
