project: gardiner’s creek trail gap masterplan

client: city of stonnington

description of project

hansen were engaged by the City of Stonnington to prepare a masterplan to reconnect a gap in a major shared path system along Gardiner’s Creek in Ascot Vale.

The site straddles three councils including the Cities of Boroondara, Stonnington & Monash. The reconnecting of the trail was hindered by many obstacles. The Malvern Valley Golf Course to the south of Gardiner’s Creek presented safety issues for cyclists and pedestrians. It also posed a problem due to the 1:10 year flood zones covering much of the golf course site.

Negotiations with the City of Boroondara then began to provide the trail on the north side of the creek which contained much higher ground and an opportunity to link in with other existing recreational facilities such as the Anniversary Trail and Ascot Vale sports ovals.

The masterplan is currently being used to secure funding for the construction of this trail which will provide an integral link in the Principal Bicycle Network for Metropolitan Melbourne.
