project: lakes reserve, taylors lakes

client: brimbank city council

description of project
hansen was engaged by Brimbank City Council in early 2007 to prepare a concept design, design development and contract documentation for the Lakes Reserve in Taylor’s Lakes.

This is one of the first in a series of park upgrades by Brimbank City Council as part of a council-wide initiative to improve their public open space facilities. The existing park is based around a series of large wetlands which filter stormwater for the surrounding catchment area.

The design aims to provide a range of specific recreational activities whilst drawing inspiration from the lake environment. A honed black concrete path forms the central spine of the park linking the entry to the park with the lake’s edge. A series of boardwalk structures and fishing platforms hug the edge of the lake providing access to the wetland environment.

Picnic and playground areas hang off either side of the central spine forming a focal point for activity within the park. A large fish-like structure curves its way through the playground providing an additional reference to the lake theme. Skillion roofed shelters in bird-like forms provide an entry feature to the park.

Given the sites proximity to a major Melbourne Water asset, the design incorporates Water Sensitive Urban Design features. Irrigation is recycled from the neighbouring stormwater ponds and filtered through a series of bio-retention swales that then feed back into the lake.

The Lakes Reserve project will become one of Brimbank’s premier public spaces, performing an educational function whilst allowing for a variety of recreational activities.
