project: sandridge beach landscape improvements
client: city of port phillip
description of project
The recently-completed landscape works at Sandridge beach represent the first stage of implementation of the Sandridge Beach Masterplan. The project brief required the design to address a number of critical issues, including acknowledgement of the ´low-key´ natural character of the foreshore reserve, preservation of bay views for nearby residents and the amelioration of noise generated by users of the existing bbq area, particularly during summer evenings.
The result is a carefully-considered combination of recycled timber retaining walls and noise attenuation walls, with subtle modifications to the existing landform to create a new amphitheatre and a re-created ´dune´ formation between the bbq area and the adjacent roadway, providing a sense of enclosure and extensive planting of indigenous coastal plant species.
hansen was responsible for the design, documentation and contract administration of the project, working closely with the client, the contractor and the local community. The project was completed on a limited budget and on time, thus ensuring its availability for the oncoming summer season.
