project: ted summerton reserve master plan
client: latrobe city council
description of project
hansen was engaged by Latrobe City Council in late 2008 to prepare a master plan for the redevelopment of Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe.
The master plan focuses on consolidating the reserve as a key civic and community asset within the Moe township through the development of a new community and recreational hub. A driving force of the redevelopment was the incorporation of the Moe Early Learning Centre (MELC), located to form a direct relationship with South Street Primary School. From the educational and community facilities associated with the MELC through to primary school, a transitional learning process is created. This notion is also reflected in the incorporation of the school oval that will enable junior and senior football teams to participate within the same precinct.
The reserve is home to the Moe Football and Netball Club, the Moe Cricket Club and the Moe Urban Fire Brigade. Several community consultation sessions were held with these groups and the community to gain an understanding of the key issues and aspirations for the reserve, which were tied in with sporting events to provide an insight into the potential of the reserve to cater for large community and regional events.
The sporting fields and facilities of these groups contribute to an integrated recreational precinct that allows for a range of activities to continue and evolve, encouraging those across the Moe community and Latrobe Valley to come together. The vision for Ted Summerton Reserve enhances the functional requirements of the surroundings for players, spectators and the local community through the resolution of vehicular and pedestrian access, shelter and seating spaces and the implementation of landscape and water sensitive urban design treatments. The master plan presents the reserve as a community park and recreational destination that builds upon the unique character of the surrounding Moe region.
