project: geelong western wedge urban design framework & railway station masterplan
client: department of sustainability & environment and city of greater geelong
description of project
hansen was engaged by the Department of Sustainability and Environment on behalf of the Victorian State Government, the City of Greater Geelong, Deakin University and Gordon Institute of TAFE to prepare an urban design framework for an area of inner-urban Geelong known as the ´Western Wedge´. Development of the framework was intended to provide a vision for the revitalization of under-utilised old industrial and railway land located in a ´wedge´ between suburban areas and the Geelong central business district and waterfront. As major landholders within the precinct, both Deakin University and Gordon Institute of TAFE were included within the client group.
The framework recognizes the potential for new development and change within the area due to its prime bayside location and large areas of underdeveloped land resulting from the obsolescence of traditional waterside industrial and warehousing functions. The final document is based on a series of key framework elements; namely activity, built form, public domain and movement.
Through extensive stakeholder consultation, the framework was developed with a high level of support and acceptance within the community, both with regard to the process and the output.
