hansen in association with Sustainable Built Environments undertook this project for the Cities of Moreland, Port Phillip and Darebin in conjunction with the Victorian Local Sustainability Network. This project investigated the opportunities for a comprehensive sustainable built environment policy framework and reviewed key sustainability assessment tools and their role in the planning process and makes recommendations for how sustainability assessment fits into the planning process.

In particular it focussed on the relationship between the planning and building legislation and the opportunities for local government to address sustainability in their planning schemes and Council planning processes. The review of Council planning application processes and use of sustainability assessment tools, Sustainable Design Scorecard (SDS) and Sustainable Tools for Environmental Performance (STEPS) sought to identify the appropriateness and success of assessment tools.
