project: bicycle parking facilities, mildura
client: victorian department of transport
description of project
hansen was engaged by the Victorian Department of Transport to assist the Mildura Rural City Council in the design of new ‘end of journey’ bicycle facilities in Central Mildura. The site chosen for the facilities was selected from a series of alternative locations on or adjacent to the City’s principal bicycle routes. The selected site near the corner of Ninth Street and Lime Avenue was set within an existing car park, adjacent to public toilets with good access to the Langtree Mall and other local retail and office destination.
The strategic rationale for the facility was established in the ‘Mildura Strategic Bicycle Plan’ which has sought additional bike usage throughout the city and surrounding region through the improvement to local paths and key destination facilities. The ‘Bike Safe Centre’ is a site specific design incorporating a range of bicycle storage and end of journey facilities including showers and change rooms. Given the climatic conditions in Mildura, provision of shelter and showering facilities were a necessary component.
The facility has been designed to complement the local streetscape and neatly conceal the open array of car parking behind. The building includes a number of undercover secure bicycle lockers as well as publicly accessible bicycle stands. Toilets, showers and change rooms are also included in the form, with an open glazed frontage to Lime Avenue for increased security and surveillance. The building presents as a pair with the existing toilet block to Ninth Avenue.
The design has been tailored to support sustainability principles, with water harvesting and storage, capacity for photo voltaic panels on the roof and use of clerestory glazing to reduce the need for internal illumination. The facility represents a simple but effective message to Mildura residents and visitors alike that it is a bike friendly city.>
