project: mersey bluff devonport urban design framework

client: devonport city council

description of project

hansen was engaged by Devonport City Council to prepare an Urban Design Framework for the Mersey Bluff Precinct in Devonport, Tasmania. The Mersey Bluff Precinct represents a unique asset within Devonport because it is an area with overlapping values. It holds significant natural, heritage, cultural values that are treasured by the local community.

The project sought to identify key redevelopment opportunities and enhancements within the foreshore precinct whist recognising the important qualities that makes Mersey Bluff special. The process involved extensive consultation sessions with Council officers, key stakeholders and local residents to realise a plan and a set of ‘guiding principles’ that support a balance of natural and built features.

The Plan identified a number of key development areas that encouraged compatible uses and activities to enliven the Mersey Bluff Precinct whilst not competing with the Devonport CBD. Such developments included eco-accommodation and mix-use developments with restaurants and cafes in amongst recreational activities. The framework plan delivers a meaningful and enduring urban design solution that maintains the Mersey Bluff Precinct an exciting attraction for both resident and visitors.
