We are delighted to announce that hansen received a prestigious National Landscape Architecture award in the category of planning at the 2010 AILA National Awards. The Viengxay Town Masterplan, Laos PDR, also received the AILA Victoria Award for Planning Excellence and the AILA Victoria Medal in Landscape Architecture in 2008, being Victoria's highest honour in Landscape Architecture. This project was also listed as a case study for the AILA's 2008 National Climate Change Project.

The jury was impressed with the project scope that assisted in knowledge transfer between client and consultant, around the issues of sustainable practice and cultural heritage management. As always in these projects, there is much to be learned on both sides of the table and the Hansen Partnership has been successful in facilitating this two-way of learning. 2010 AILA National Awards Jury Citation

In most third world countries, a lack of community capacity presents a significant stumbling block on the road to poverty alleviation. Similarly, landscape architects and other professionals face challenges working in historical sites of international interest where local and distinct cultural groups are facing global pressures of various sorts, particularly increasing prosperity through economic and tourism planning.

The Viengxay Town Master Plan represents a sensitive and remarkable achievement in addressing these crucial issues, and demonstrates the advanced leadership and management skills of Australian Landscape Architects practising abroad. The project is an exemplar of a participatory approach to landscape planning which has application across towns and cities worldwide where similar ethically sensitive issues are increasingly to be encountered. 2008 AILA Victoria Project Awards Jury Citation

"The Award is indeed a reassuring manifestation for the excellent work (hansen has) done and one of the many success stories of our ST-EP Programme". Olivia Doxsee, Project Coordinator, Development Assistance Department, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
