The inspiring, engaging and informative PIA National Congress "Critical Mass: planning engages the world" was held in picturesque Hobart 7-9 March 2011. With speakers from across Australia and internationally focussing on 'thinking', 'working', and 'living' planning Roz, Emily, Sarah and Andrea were exposed to a range of valuable fresh ideas and techniques which will be embraced in our future projects. The event was topped off with The PIA National Awards and Gala Dinner.
hansen, in collaboration with Sustainable Built Environments, Municipal Association of Victoria and the Victorian Council Alliance for Sustainable Built Environments were the proud recipients of the PIA National Environmental Planning and Conservation Award 2011 for the project MAV Local Government Planning for Sustainable Buildings Guide.
The award citation states:
The Local Government Planning for Sustainable Buildings Guide is an easy to navigate guide that steps the reader through the benefits of sustainable buildings, how to request better performing buildings and how to assess them as part of a planning application. The guide also assists council staff on how to set up a sustainability assessment process for their municipality.
The judges were impressed by the readability of the guide and its usefulness in assisting councils through the challenge of integrating sustainability into planning frameworks and decisions. The judges hope it will be kept up to date with the fast evolving progress in the field of sustainability assessment tools.
