16/03/11 MS Australia 24 hour mega swim
Feeling like making a splash for a great cause?
Well that's exactly what Gary Wissenden and Craig Czarny did the other week, joining forces with other planners to participate in the MS 24 hour Mega Swim held at Fitzroy Pool.
The 24 Hour Mega Swim is a team event comprising teams of no more than 15 swimmers. The challenge is for each team to have one swimmer in the water for the entire 24 hours. The aim of the swim is to have fun, and more importantly to help spread awareness about the impact of multiple sclerosis. The swimmers raise money through sponsorship.
With relay laps of 20 minutes each, everyone got into the event, swimming throughout the night and cheering one another on.
Craig and Gary's team raised in excess of $8,000 on the day. In total, the Fitzroy Pool event raised $261,067 for MS and it is only one of many similar events being held around the country over the coming months.
An estimated 18,000 people in Australia have Multiple Sclerosis, costing Australia $2 billion each year. With no known cause or cure, raising awareness, as well as much needed funds for the cause, is essential.
Congratulations to Gary and Craig for their efforts as well as all those staff members who supported them with sponsorship. We hope to be back in the pool next year to participate in this important fund raising event!
